Life Guard Service
Working as a lifeguard at my town’s public aquatic facility taught me what it means to stay responsible for others even when nothing appears to be going wrong. During busy shifts, I continuously monitored swimmers of all ages, identified potential safety risks, enforced pool policies, and worked with fellow lifeguards to respond quickly when concerns arose.
Staying prepared was an everyday responsibility. I participated in regular training and safety drills, practiced emergency-response procedures, and maintained CPR/AED and First Aid certification. The job also taught me how to communicate calmly and professionally—whether explaining safety rules, assisting someone who needed help, or de-escalating conflicts with patrons.
Long outdoor shifts demanded physical endurance and sustained concentration, but they also taught me that prevention is often the most important part of protecting others. Lifeguarding strengthened my judgment, teamwork, and confidence while giving me the responsibility of helping keep a community space safe and welcoming.
Make my community better!
I learned from serving my local community that meaningful impact often comes through small, consistent acts of kindness. Through my high school’s Interact Club, I volunteered regularly in a variety of community programs and received the Distinguished Service Award, recognizing students with the highest levels of service participation.
My experiences ranged from assisting with childcare programs at local elementary schools and supporting an Indigenous cultural exhibition to helping organize activities at the public library. Each setting gave me a different way to connect with people in my community and taught me that service does not always need to be large or highly visible to matter. Sometimes it simply means showing up, helping where help is needed, and being willing to contribute.
